The Finalists from the 2014 Pitch Event
We had a tremendous response to our first ever Wolfson Innovate Pitch Event. A remarkable 32 ideas were sent in (sadly one missed the deadline). Just as remarkable is the willingness of 16 Wolfson alumni and associates to tackle the difficult job of selecting the ideas to invite for the Pitch Event held on Monday 28 April 2014. Originally we were going for 5 but it was so difficult, as there were such great entries, we opted for 6* instead.
Here are the results:
INNOVATION OF THE YEAR
SENTIMOTO - Team: Lisa Stroux, Alessandro Guazzi, Tasas Papastylianou, Maxim Osipov
A wearable, wrist-worn sensing device, designed for older people, that monitors physiological and environmental data to allow older people and their carers to manage their health better and to help care-givers quantify the effect of the care provided.
Harvest Wild - Team: Manas Nanda, Takeshi Chino, Jason Kang and Warit Thanopachai
Seeks to enable local communities to earn a livelihood through the sale of non-timber forest products instead of chopped forest timber by providing access to capital, technical know-how and sales and distributioin expertise. This idea will create strong economic incentives for impoverished forest-dwelling communities to conserve the forest resources.
OhmCare - Team: João Domingos, Carlos Arteta, Mauro Santos, Marco Pimentel and Mohammad Ali Maraci.
Seeks to make available a package, including smartphone-based sensors and evidence-based decision support tools, by offering these to local primary care providers on a subscription based model to allow them to expand their offerings to include screening and management for common non-communicable diseases (CVD, diabetes and Chronic Airways Disease).
VibeWrite - Team: Jessica White, Falk Wolsky, Daniel Kaesmacher, Alex Hanke, Adham Badhr, Thomas Hüttenhofer, David Lechón Quiñones, Deepak Mishra, Carina Evangelista Miranda and Mario Garcia.
An edutech pen that helps children (and adults) learn how to write and spell, by gently vibrating when a mistake is made. It has a built-in Wi-Fi to combine classic pen use with digital use cases - mobile and desktop apps. There is an app for teachers as well as parents to collect data and understand how they can help children to learn better by understanding their mistakes more comprehensively.
Behive: Social Audio System - Team: Dr Yi Samuel Chen, Anna Apsit, Enrico Manfredi-Haylock, Joshua Reynolds and Pietro Salvi
A pair of over-ear headphones, which once disconnected from the headband becomes a fully functional set of speakers. The product enables people to easily switch between listening to music privately and sharing it with their friends, all with the same portable device.
Woxford Environmental E&T - Team: Ke Yang, Qiong Lu, Xiafu Shi, Pharima Pongpairoj and Licheng Shen.
Seeks to establish an EU-China integrated business to provide professional engineering and technical services on industrial wastewater treatment in the EU and China. The product, a High Performance Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) reactor system, is an excellent solution for the combined disposal of organic industrial wastewater, removal of pollutants, and recovery of bio-energy.
*Many congratulations must go to the Eureka Medica team on reaching the Finals of the OneStart Europe Competition 2014, which is a fantastic achievement. Unfortunately, the dates clashed with our competition and so they had to withdraw from the Wolfson Innovate Pitch Event.
